History and Who’s Who
South Yorkshire Community Foundation is a registered charitable trust which was established to inspire local giving by Businesses, Individuals, Trusts and Government.
The Foundation was launched in 1986 by the Princess Royal. At the time, the region's coalfields were undergoing closure and the local steel industry was in decline . The numbers of people in South Yorkshire who were facing hardship grew to nationally significant levels.
Many families and communities within South Yorkshire are still facing significant barriers, such as:
- Economic exclusion.
- Aspiration poverty
- Lack of opportunity for personal development.
- Lack of good role models in particular societies.
The Foundation exists to distribute funds to local voluntary and community groups across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield with two objectives in mind:
In June 2007, South Yorkshire was hit by the largest natural disaster the region had seen in living memory. Unprecedented levels of rainfall caused devastating flooding across the region, affecting 5395 homes and destroying communities. Within 24 hours, South Yorkshire Community Foundation launched an appeal for donations to help the victims to rebuild their lives. Over £1.6 million was raised for distribution locally, all of it from donations from the general public, Businesses and Trusts.
There are more than 60 Community Foundations across the UK, and we are affiliated to the Community Foundation Network, the UK national umbrella body for community foundations.

The Foundation is also supported by a strong army of volunteers. These people give up their time to support the aims of the Foundation through fundraising, decision making and assessments for our grant-making panels and project work. Without their contributions, much of what we have achieved would simply not be possible.
