Flood case study - Barnsley
Over 700 households were affected by the floods in the Barnsley area alone.
Their needs have been typical of those across the entire South Yorkshire region, ranging from entire ground floor devastation to the inconvenience of lost utility supplies for just a few hours.
A 92 year old lady was glad to be back into her own home following the flood. Mrs H explained: "I lost everything....now gradually getting a few things back. Everything in the drawers, cupboards...all gone....I need things for the kitchen as I lost everything even down to salt and pepper pots."
And a few streets away, the story was even more poignant: "All our belongings were packed away ready to move....we lost almost everything including the house sale."
Writing in October 2007, a couple in their 70's described the problems caused by ongoing ground floor restoration work. They told us: "We are both in our 70's and are ill of health. We are still living in the bedroom upstairs. We are having to buy a meal at a time so it's very expensive. We've had no heat or hot water since the flood."
But for some, even a small amount of support has gone a long way to restore some sense of hope.
One lady wrote to say: "Thank you so very, very much for the payment from the Flood Fund. You can't imagine how much it means to me, it has had me in tears of relief. My love, good wishes and prayers to all who have donated and worked so hard for the Fund since the dreadful floods."
