Unsung heroes boosted with community cash for local projects
26th March 2009
WORTHWHILE community projects throughout the region have received a welcome boost, after the Star Community Cash Giveaway gave cash injections to more than 60 local groups.
Through the South Yorkshire Community Foundation' Grassroots Grants programme a bumper pot of £50,000 was made available exclusively to Star readers, aiming to help groups work on shoestring budgets throughout Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley.
Grants ranging from £250 to £700 were awarded to 63 local projects throughout the region, with many different types of group successfully applying for a slice of the cash.
Pauline Grice, chief executive of SYCF, said: "We are delighted that so many fantastic groups have been able to get hold of some money through the Star Community Cash Giveaway.
"Small amounts of money can mean so much to groups that are volunteer led, and we hope this cash injection will give them the ability to push on with their work."
Of the 63 groups awarded a grant through the giveaway, 46 were making their first ever application to the South Yorkshire Community Foundation.
"Getting the word out through the Star has enabled us to access so many worthwhile projects throughout the area, and extend the excellent benefits that our grant monies can have in local communities."
Groups ranging from boxing clubs and drama societies, to brass bands and old people's lunch clubs were among the beneficiaries of the first ever Star Community Cash Giveaway.
Alan Powell, editor of the Star, said: "The list of organisations to benefit from the cash fund shows a tremendous amount of diversity and demonstrates how vibrant the community sector is.
"Sheffield is full of people who are willing to give their time and energy to community enterprise and it is gratifying that so many organisations will benefit".
The funding has been made available through the Grassroots Grants programme funded by the Office of the Third Sector that aims to provide much needed support to small community groups that need it most.
The programme will run until March 2011, with groups enable to apply for a maximum of £5,000 before the programme ends.
This means that all the fantastic groups supported by the Star Community Cash Giveaway could be eligible to receive even more future funding to assist with the great work being done in local communities.
Any group wanting to find out if they could be eligible for a Grassroots Grant should visit www.sycf.org.uk or call 0114 2424294 for more information.
