Unsung heroes given massive boost by Sheffield United Community cash Giveaway

30th March 2009

INTEREST in the Sheffield United Community Cash Giveaway was so high that the Blades have smashed the initial total they had to give, helping more than 20 worthy local groups in the process.

Through the South Yorkshire Community Foundation' Grassroots Grants programme a bumper pot of £10,000 was made available exclusively to the Blades' supporters, aiming to help groups who work on shoestring budgets throughout Sheffield.

But so many groups were eager to get hold of the cash that SYCF upped the ante, providing £14,556 to 23 local groups and projects.

Pauline Grice, chief executive of SYCF, said: "We are delighted that so many fantastic groups have been able to get hold of some money through the Sheffield United Community Cash Giveaway.

"Small amounts of money can mean so much to groups that are volunteer led, and we hope this cash injection will give them the ability to push on with their work."

Of the 23 groups awarded a grant through the giveaway, 15 were making their first ever application to the South Yorkshire Community Foundation.

"Getting the word out through Sheffield United has enabled us to access so many worthwhile projects throughout the area, and extend the excellent benefits that our grant monies can have in local communities."

The funding has been made available through the Grassroots Grants programme funded by the Office of the Third Sector that aims to provide much needed support to small community groups that need it most.

The programme will run until March 2011, with groups enable to apply for a maximum of £5,000 before the programme ends.
