Relatives of Drug Abusers (RODA) - building the capacity of charities and community projects

4th February 2008

Relatives of Drug Abusers (RODA) is a registered charity based at Shirecliffe Community Centre in Sheffield. The group offers a free, confidential support service to those whose lives are affected by someone else's drug misuse. RODA provides practical and emotional support giving members an opportunity to share feelings in a safe environment, and to empower them to focus on their own lives despite their carer role. The grant will have a significant impact on the service the group provides and to the group's long term sustainability.

£1,500 from Capacity Builders and £3,500 from the Neighbourhood Renewal Community Chest made up their grant of £5,000 which enabled the group to pay a part time administration worker.

Alison Sadler, Project Coordinator said:

"The grant has enabled us to employ one of our volunteers for 12 hours per week. This has considerably increased our ability to deliver our services by easing the administrative burden on the other staff. "

As a result of the increased capacity, the support staff are able to deliver services to more people. Alison continued:

"Having another member of the team has motivated the staff and increased the dynamics of the group. More families are benefiting from support and are empowered, They take that empowerment into the community."
